BS 25999 Business Continuity Management
Organizations must be able to continue operations in the event of a disruptive, unforeseen circumstance(s), which could be caused by a major catastrophe or a minor incident. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program (PS-Prep). PS-Prep is directed by Title IX of the Implementing the Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007. A Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) includes disaster management, emergency management and other business continuity programs.
BS 25999, Business Continuity Management is one of the standards identified by the Ps-Prep program for certification. It provides the framework for a BCMS. The standard is designed to keep your business going during the most challenging and unexpected of circumstances. It is divided into two parts; part 1 provides guidelines for implementation of the specifications while part 2 provides the specification for the BCMS and applicable business sectors.
This standard is applicable to all types of businesses. This is especially important for a business where the continuity of business functions is critically important, such as banking and financial institutions, hospitals, telecommunication companies, and transportation providers.
